A group of 15 smiling seniors and facilitators stand together in a bright room at Beaches Sandbox, gathered around colorful mosaic panels laid out on the floor. The artwork was created during a community mosaic mural workshop led by artist Cristina Delago and supported by Mural Routes and a New Horizons for Seniors Program grant.

In February and March 2025, we partnered with Mural Routes to offer a creative program designed specifically for older adults: PIECE BY PIECE: Mosaic Workshops for Seniors. With essential funding from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, 15 seniors from Toronto joined us. They explored the art of mosaics and built something beautiful together.

Crafting Connections Through Art

Led by the talented mosaic mural artist Cristina Delago, each participant created a unique panel. These individual pieces now contribute to a permanent mural installation proudly displayed at Beaches Sandbox. The theme of this mural is unmistakably focused on creativity, connection, and fun — elements we deeply value at Beaches Sandbox. You can find more about our initiatives here.

One amazing aspect of this project is sustainability. All materials used were recycled, reused, or upcycled. This initiative not only supports creativity but also promotes environmental responsibility.

Participants in the mosaic mural workshop at Beaches Sandbox gather around a table as artist Cristina Delago demonstrates how to grout mosaic tiles. Seniors look on with interest, surrounded by buckets, gloves, and vibrant mosaic panels in various stages of completion.

Why This Program Matters

During the trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mural Routes started offering mosaic workshops. The aim was to reduce social isolation and encourage creativity within the senior community. This program continues that vital legacy. It serves as a constant reminder of the power of art, community, and staying connected at every age.

Workshops like this are not just about having fun. Research shows they can support mental wellness, reduce isolation, and create chances for seniors to remain active, social, and creative. When seniors engage in artistic endeavors, they often experience a renewed sense of purpose.

The completed community mosaic mural is installed in the stairwell of Beaches Sandbox. The vibrant 18-panel artwork features scenes of local life, nature, and Canadian symbols, all crafted from reused, recycled, and upcycled materials by local seniors as part of a New Horizons for Seniors Program project.

We are incredibly proud to house this collaborative mural. It is a celebration of the creativity demonstrated by the talented community members who contributed their skills.
