We’re so excited to share a brand-new piece of community art now on display at Beaches Sandbox!

A group of 15 smiling seniors and facilitators stand together in a bright room at Beaches Sandbox, gathered around colorful mosaic panels laid out on the floor. The artwork was created during a community mosaic mural workshop led by artist Cristina Delago and supported by Mural Routes and a New Horizons for Seniors Program grant.

Over February and March 2025, we partnered with Mural Routes to offer a creative program designed just for older adults: PIECE BY PIECE: Mosaic Workshops for Seniors. With funding from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, 15 Toronto seniors joined us to explore the art of mosaics and build something beautiful — together.

Led by mosaic mural artist Cristina Delago, each participant created a unique panel that now forms part of a permanent mural installation, now proudly displayed at the Sandbox. The theme? Creativity, connection, and fun — three things we value deeply here at Beaches Sandbox.

Even better, all materials used were recycled, reused, or upcycled, making this a sustainable art project with heart.

Participants in the mosaic mural workshop at Beaches Sandbox gather around a table as artist Cristina Delago demonstrates how to grout mosaic tiles. Seniors look on with interest, surrounded by buckets, gloves, and vibrant mosaic panels in various stages of completion.

Why this program matters:

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mural Routes began offering mosaic workshops to reduce social isolation and bring seniors together through creativity. This program continues that legacy, reminding us of the power of art, community, and staying connected at every age.

Workshops like this are more than just fun — they’re proven to support mental wellness, reduce isolation, and create opportunities for seniors to stay active, social, and creative.

The completed community mosaic mural is installed in the stairwell of Beaches Sandbox. The vibrant 18-panel artwork features scenes of local life, nature, and Canadian symbols, all crafted from reused, recycled, and upcycled materials by local seniors as part of a New Horizons for Seniors Program project.

We're incredibly proud to be the new home for this collaborative mural and to celebrate the creativity of the talented community members who contributed.

Come see the mural for yourself! Next time you visit the Sandbox, stop by and take in the details of this joyful piece of art.
