Bread of the Dead Cooking Workshop

Saturday, November 2 | 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Adults & Youth Over 12

Free

In this baking workshop, you will learn the traditional way of making the delicious Mexican bread of the dead.

Pan de Muerto or “Bread of the Dead” is a soft sweet bread, similar to brioche, that is usually baked on the days leading up to and on the Day of the Dead (November 1 and 2) in Mexico. The shape of the bread represents a heart and bones. The bread of the dead is one of the elements of the altar for the dead. It is ritually offered to feed the souls of loved ones, who during the designated dates travel from the afterlife to visit their homes and families.

Violeta Correa Soria, Pancho's Bakery

Violeta Correa Soria developed a passion for baking at a young age, learning from her mother as they baked cakes and cookies for their large family gatherings. To refine her skills, she pursued courses in baking and cake decorating. Her love for the craft deepened when she married Adal Aguilar, a fourth-generation member of a family bakery business in Morelia, Mexico. In 2009, after spending a year in Toronto and longing for the flavors of traditional Mexican bread, Violeta and her husband Adal decided to open their own bakery.

Pancho’s Bakery, founded by the couple, is a proud participant in Toronto's annual Día de Muertos celebrations, where they offer their signature Pan de Muerto made from an authentic Morelia recipe.
